In 1799 a picture book entitled Gahō Hikketsu (i.e., Brushwork as a Principle of Painting) was published by Mosuke Mitsuboshiya. It included the twenty pictures of flowers and (or) birds shown in this gallery. The anonymous artist only suggested their actual shapes and colored them in shades of gray. This drawing style was based on a Chinese style popular with amateur painters. While It has been suggested that the artist was Gessai Numata (1787-1864) he was only twelve when this book was published.
